For 2027, Yamaha is making some of the biggest changes to the smaller end of its Sport Boat lineup in years.

The big news? New 18-foot and 20-foot Yamaha Sport Boats replace the previous 19-foot series, giving boaters more choices for an easy-to-own, easy-to-trailer runabout without immediately stepping up to Yamaha’s larger 22-, 25- or 27-foot boats.

For boaters around Chicago, Northwest Indiana, Southwest Michigan and throughout the Great Lakes region, these new models hit a particularly interesting sweet spot. They combine manageable size with Yamaha jet propulsion, shallow draft, innovative technology, watersports versatility and Yamaha’s signature integrated swim-platform design.

The 2027 lineup includes the SX180 and AR182 in Yamaha’s new 18FT Runabout Series; the AR200, AR205 and 205SD in the 20FT Runabout Series; and the performance-oriented 205XD in Yamaha’s 20FT Wake Series.

And while these boats may look similar at first glance, there are some important differences in engines, helm technology, control systems, watersports equipment and overall mission.

The New 18FT Yamaha Sport Boats

The new 18-foot platform is an intriguing addition to the 2027 Yamaha lineup.

Both the SX180 and AR182 measure 17’6″ long with a 7’6″ beam, 16-inch draft and 18.5-degree deadrise. Both have seating capacity for six and a 30-gallon fuel capacity.

They’re also powered by the same single 1.9-liter High Output Yamaha four-cylinder, four-stroke marine engine, coupled to Yamaha’s 155mm high-pressure jet pump.

The SX180 is the value-oriented entry point into the new series.

Its 1.9L High Output engine provides a simple single-engine package, while the low-profile windscreen creates a sporty, open cockpit.

At only 2,150 pounds dry, the SX180 should also appeal to owners who place a high priority on trailerability and ease of ownership.

It’s a great fit for cruising, swimming, tubing, exploring smaller lakes and taking quick trips out onto Lake Michigan when conditions cooperate.

The AR182 takes the same basic concept in a more watersports-oriented direction.

The AR182 weighs 2,260 pounds dry—only 110 pounds more than the SX180—while offering a very different appearance and personality.

For a family that wants a compact Yamaha but plans to spend plenty of time tubing, skiing and enjoying other watersports, the AR182 may be the sweet spot of the new 18FT series.

The SVHO produces approximately 252 horsepower, giving the AR205 a substantial amount of power for a boat in this size class.

The result should be particularly attractive for owners who enjoy acceleration, watersports or frequently boat with a full passenger load.

In other words, the AR205 isn’t simply a more highly optioned AR200. Its biggest upgrade is underneath the engine hatch.

But the SD adds something equally important: a higher level of electronic control.

One of the most visible differences is directly in front of the driver.

Instead of the smaller 5-inch Connext display used on the lower models, the 205SD receives a larger 7-inch Connext touchscreen.

That larger interface makes it easier to access and control boat functions from the helm and gives the 205SD a much more sophisticated feel.

What Is Yamaha DRiVE?

The 205XD uses the same supercharged 1.8L SVHO engine producing approximately 252 horsepower and adds the larger 7-inch Connext touchscreen, Yamaha DRiVE, E-Series functionality and drive-by-wire technology.

The 205XD adds an integrated ballast system and integrated manual WakeBooster to help shape the wake for watersports.
